Share your Fall Fest Experience
Fall Fest is happening on the USF campus, but why don't we party on in the virtual space that is available to us? It never rains on Facebook
If you add the tag "usffallfest" to the Fall Fest photos that you upload on Flickr, they will show up in the slide show on the Fall Fest website. Update 10/23: Now you can also upload your pictures to this album on Picasa - no tag necessary.

Keeping dry
Unfortunately, it looks like this year's Fall Fest will offer wet conditions. On the other hand, what could be more appropriate to help evoke that feeling of Fall than rain falling? Just make sure to bring your rain gear and keep your feet dry. However, the rain does call for some changes to the locations of events in the Fall Fest program:
- The School of Nursing reunion tonight will take place in the Kalmanovitz Atrium, instead of the Rooftop terrace.
- The University Ministry tells us that the October Outreach at 7:30 am Saturday morning will be in the McLaren Conference Center lobby instead of Harney Plaza.
- The RHA Carnival on Saturday October 23 will be located in the Hayes Healy Lounge instead of Harney Plaza.
The fabulous block party and soccer tailgate will still be outside - so bring warm clothes and a big smile! Have a look at the fall fest program for all the latest updates.
How was your Freshman’s first 8-weeks at USF?
Just eight weeks into the semester and the transition to college is still in full swing for many students. Come learn more about the transition process, the five biggest problems associated with the transition to college, and ways to succeed and stay on track.
Dean of Students, Dr. Mary J. Wardell, Executive Director of Counseling and
Psychological Services, Dr. Barbara Thomas, and Associate Professor Nursing, Dr. Mary Lou De Natale will be on-hand to answer questions.

Decade Reunions for 80s, 90s, and 00s at Fall Fest
As Fall Fest and the Decade Reunions (Saturday October 23, 5pm, Fromm Hall) for USF alumni who graduated in the 80s, 90s, and 00s, come closer, it is time to look at what kind of party behavior we can expect at the reunion. Obviously, we go to the good old yearbooks for some information on the social rituals that characterized each decade.
Judging from the photos below, it is going to be an exotic reunion in Fromm Hall on Fall Fest Saturday, to say the least. If you're not into tooth blackout, pink dresses, or m&m costumes anymore, you can come anyway. So sign up now for Fall Fest, and don't forget to check the little box that confirms that you will be attending the Decade Reunions as well. Party on!
USF MBA For Executives Reunion Reception at Fall Fest
The School of Business and Professional Studies sends the following invitation to MBA Executive alumni to come to Fall Fest:

All our MBAE alumni, current MBAE students, and their guests are invited to attend the MBAE 20-year anniversary celebration on October 23, 2010, from 5:00pm - 7:00pm in Fromm Hall. Dean Mike Duffy will be there, along with past and present MBAE faculty, to welcome you back to the USF campus, and to talk about how the program is evolving.
This is a great opportunity to reunite with your cohort, reconnect with the faculty, meet other MBAE alumni and current students, and find out what's new in our MBAE program and the School of Business and Professional Studies. This event will be an exciting and engaging networking opportunity!
Hervé Bruckert of De Novo Wines and MBAE class of 2003, will be supplying their great 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon to toast and celebrate. The reception fee is $25.
If you have any questions, please contact Saundra Hudnall at 415.422.2584 or at sdhudnall@usfca.edu.

Behind the Scenes: The Secrets of USF’s Cafeteria
At Fall Fest, parents, alumni, and friends get a sample of the student experience--a little residence life, a little entertainment (the Homecoming concert) and a little learning (the lectures). At 4 p.m. on Saturday,

A cafeteria worker tosses pizza dough in the Market Cafe. Photo: Karim Iliya.
Oct. 23, they can head down to the Market Cafe in the newly-renovated University Center to have a taste of what the students eat.
USF's Bon Appetit manager Holly Winslow will lead the "Behind the Scenes at the Market Cafe" Tour, which, as she further explained during our interview, exposes a menu that isn't your typical cafeteria fare (and almost definitely surpasses the "gross" red snapper, wilted salad and warm milk that USF served in the 60s).
How long have you been working at Bon Appétit here at USF, and what brought you here?
USF brought me here.
I have been working for Bon Appétit Management Company for five years. I was in the hotel industry for seventeen years at Cornell University and Penn State University where I operated Food & Beverage Departments and taught in each of those schools. I am an East Coast girl, born and raised in New York and I came to the West Coast to experience something new and change my life style.
We've all heard of the seafood diet joke---"I see food, then I eat it." From what I gather, people will be seeing quite a bit of food at the "Behind the Scenes" Tour. Will they be eating any?
The tour will feature the following:
1. A Front of House tour, with statistics of service, hours, menus
2. A Culinary Tour into our Back of House
3. An understanding of our history and philosophy:
- Cooking from Scratch
- Community Role
- Student Opportunities
- Our Sustainable Practices
4. Tasting
Is there anything surprising or interesting that most people don't know about the cafeteria?
I think that there are several items that shock the students daily and that is they only think we use the farmers on Farmers Markets Days but in actuality we use those farmers and up to forty farmers everyday and every week.

I don't think they realize that we serve over 8000 transactions a day. I am certain they are not aware that when we produce mashed potatoes we produce 2000 portions of mashed potatoes. It takes over 300 people and 11 Managers to serve the USF Community.
I know they would be shocked to know that our Bakery Team arrives at 2:00 am in the morning to produce all of our items sold on site including the Vegan Pastry, and Gluten Free items.
What's your personal favorite dish on the Market Cafe's menu?
My favorite item in the Market is hard to pinpoint; I am a foodie and love savory to sweet items, but if I had to select my favorite station it would have to be Station 500. This station always features the entire plate and dessert for under 500 calories. I wrote over 1000 menus and love to count calories and love to eat healthy.
My favorite sweet item is the Vegan Oatmeal Cookie and the Gluten Free Chocolate Rice Krispie Treat.

Hello USF Alumni!
October is the perfect month for all of us to return to the USF campus and have a blast reconnecting with our classmates, friends, favorite faculty and current students during FALL FEST WEEKEND, October 22nd - 24th.
I would like to ask you to spread the word to your personal USF alumni network and help bring even more guests to this great weekend of USF fun and connections. Today, with 10 days out, more than 230 USF alumni and friends signed up already!
We kick-off with a huge block party on Friday (22nd), followed by the Santa Clara men’s soccer game and an outdoor movie.
On Saturday (23rd) there will be a variety of activities…I’m taking in one of the lectures and then attending lunch with the president of the university.
Most special on Saturday is the 5 pm Decades Reunion which is open to all USF alumni and especially those who graduated in the classes of the 80s, 90s, and 00’s. Definitely join us for this event, and bring your fellow alumni!
For those who have energy left on Sunday morning, the Tom Caruso 5K Run/Walk at Golden Gate Park is a good and healthy way to end Fall Fest.
