Yesterday, we passed the milestone with a classy ceremony commemorating the start of construction and honoring the name sake of the building: John Lo Schiavo, S.J. Please visit this new site to learn more about the man and the naming of our new science center.
The Kalmanovitz Foundation’s $10 million gift to the center spearheaded the naming; Kalmanovitz board members Orsi and Giraudo relayed stories of Fr. Lo Schiavo, and Fr. Lo himself took to the podium last, describing the 150-yr span of USF sciences and what a truly enormous step this project will be for USF.
I was very happy to stand and clap my hands to stay warm — the gray fog was out in force on the hilltop, begging USF to reconsider its 1930′s change of mascot. One reason I stood was an unexpectedly large crowd — easily 200+ gathered to cheer the start of construction.
